ABSTRACT

This research project thesis explains the construction of an electronic rain gauge, which has been developed to run in the auto mode. As a result, the device has the ability to run without human intervention for several days, continuously. Also, as the device can store rainfall data for nearly two months, it can be used to take rainfall measurements in areas where people cannot approach with ease every day.

The introductive chapter discusses the importance of knowledge of rainfall measurement and about various rain gauges that are used to obtain rainfall measurements. The basic design parameters to be considered prior to real time construction the rain gauge followed by the construction steps are briefly described in the Design and Construction chapter.

The proposed device ensures precise rainfall measurements. The key features of the device are, automatic rainfall data storage, real time information display, and the navigation from the keypad to retrieve past rainfall measurements. In addition, all the past data can be taken out and stored in a computer manually. If a particular area is experiencing a threat of a flood, the device is capable of emitting an alarm, by making use of its recent past recorded data. Consequently, the constructed device has achieved its entire requirement that was required.
